 | Update on The Raw Chocolate Movement A few months ago I ran into my friend Eli at the Anaheim Natural Products Expo. We hadn’t seen each other in years. Eli was there on the fateful day when I first tasted a raw cacao bean — a moment that launched me on a raw chocolate pogrom that has now, 10 years later, changed the entire structure of the chocolate industry, brought chocolate from junk food to superfood, made “cacao” a household word, transformed our understanding of the world’s most loved food, and brought Sacred Chocolate to you. In fact, that moment when I bit into a cacao bean for the first time I was at Eli’s house in Maui, Hawaii. We had come back from a yoga class and we were making a fresh coconut smoothie. Cacao beans were there; they had been dried and prepared by Eli’s and his brother Ethan’s friend. At that point, I didn’t know what they were, and was peeling them to add to our best smoothie ever. Eli asked me,“Have you ever just eaten one?” I said, “No.” The next one I peeled and bit into, and the rest is history. Since that time, there have been a number of discoveries made about raw chocolate (and about chocolate in general!) including: cacao is #1 antioxidant food in the world, cacao is extraordinarily rich in the minerals that we require to fight stress (magnesium, iron, chromium, zinc, copper, manganese, and phosphorus), cacao contains PEA love chemicals, cacao contains some of the best soluble fiber of any food, and cacao contains the bliss chemical anandamide (see below!). In 1996, just a little over a decade after the discovery of neurotransmitter PEA compounds (love chemicals) in chocolate, researchers discovered the bliss chemical “anandamide” in chocolate. And, as far as I know, chocolate is the only food to contain anandamide. Anandamide is an endogenous ligand that your body produces when you feel a workout “high.” It is a natural pleasure molecule that fits into the cannabinoid receptor sites of the cells of the nervous system. Anandamide has been associated with improving motivation and increasing pleasure. A study published in July 1998 indicated that anandamide inhibits human breast cancer cells.* What is the underlying message of anandamide?
